My name is John Maloney and I am looking forwrd to becoming a high school math teacher in San Jose. I was laid off from an engineering job after 27 years and decided to seek out a career change and pursue my passion for coaching cross country/track. I coached for 17 years at Santa Clara University before my wife and I had our first child. Before her birth, I resigned from coaching, but my layoff inspired to get back into coaching after an 11 year hiatus. I am in my second year coaching high school cross country and am looking forward to returning to Fresno this weekend for the state championship racing against the illustrious Mt. Carmel Sun Devils. This will be my first time at the state meet as a high school coach instead of a college coach recruiting high school athletes. I started classes at National University 16 months ago and took a break to pass the CSET and land another engineering job, my last one before teaching. I am also looking forward to teaching so I can resume some normalcy with my wife and two daughters while I currently work as an engineering tech, coach, and take classes.
From my personality survey results, I am a ISTJ (Introverted, Sensitive, Thinking, Juding) personality type. My personality influenced my choice of mathematics as my conent area for teaching. I enjoy planning out a logical step by step approach to problem solving which is consistent with showing geometric proofs and solving algebraic expressions. ISTJ thinkers are content with knowing the facts. That is mathematics which involves no grey areas.
Also, from the personality survey, I have a sense of duty and loyalty that I have established with myassociation with Santa Clara University and my past employer for 27 years. I have been a basketball scorekeeper for Santa Clara University since I left coaching there over 12 years ago. I was surprised to learn my personality type is seen in officiating sports, something I really enjoy. I believe that my commitment to my students will manifest in becoming an excellent teacher

I found from the teaching style survey where I scored high (formal authority and personal model) and learning style survey (collaborative) to be spot on with my vision of myself as a coach currently and soon to be math teacher. I do a great amount of collaborative work with my teams (such as getting 60 kids at the end of every meet for a photo) and found the longer that I have coached that how important that I model good behavior stands out more than anything I say.to them on behavior. I believe that a great deal of collaborative work in math class will be very beneficial to my classroom. I am looking forward to using small groups and pairs of students during class time to demonstrate collaborative practices.
